Producers urged to get ahead of the carbon curve
Hunter region red meat producers are being encouraged to take a proactive step into the carbon space, with Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) Carbon EDGE workshop coming to Singleton on 19-20 November 2025.
Carbon is no longer a distant concept – it is shaping markets, influencing consumer expectations, and driving opportunities for productivity gains on farm. From soil health and drought resilience to emissions reduction and carbon credits, the topic is firmly on the agenda for agriculture’s future.
The two-day Carbon EDGE course is designed to cut through the complexity, giving producers the knowledge and tools to make informed business decisions. Participants will explore the science of carbon and greenhouse gases, identify practical ways to reduce emissions and store more carbon, and build a tailored action plan suited to their grazing enterprise.
“Carbon is not just about environmental stewardship – it’s about resilience, profitability and positioning your business for future market opportunities,” said Eloise Haigh, Natural Capital Advisor with Hunter Local Land Services.
Producers who engage early in carbon management also reap on-farm benefits such as healthier soils, improved water retention, stronger pastures, and greater biodiversity. These natural advantages flow through to livestock productivity, business resilience in variable climates, and stronger connections with consumers who are increasingly seeking sustainable food choices.
Singleton’s workshop will be delivered by leading facilitators Callen Thompson (AgStar Projects) and David Harbison (D R Agriculture). Thanks to support from Local Land Services and the SQNNSW Innovation Hub through the Australian Government’s Future Drought Fund, the producer fee is just $250 + GST (discounted from $1,750).
Registrations include a comprehensive manual, planning templates, tools and resources, plus catering. Places are limited and expected to fill quickly and producers are invited to register at the MLA website.
