This is Australia’s first Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (MER) Plan focused on Regional Forest Agreements (RFAs).
The plan brings together existing forest monitoring and research across NSW RFA regions. It clearly links this work to RFA outcomes. The plan also sets priority actions and improves access to reliable information. This helps communities and decision makers make informed choices about forest management.
The plan is organised around five themes:
Although the plan uses these themes, it recognises that forests operate within connected social and ecological systems. For example, climate change affects environmental, social and economic values. Aboriginal people also connect to Country in a holistic way, including spiritual, cultural and economic connections.
The RFA MER Plan is part of the broader NSW Forest Monitoring and Improvement Program. This program strengthens the evidence base for forest management across NSW. It uses risk based monitoring, clear performance thresholds, baselines and predictive modelling.
The plan will be reviewed and updated regularly. This helps ensure forest management in NSW remains strategic, adaptive and evidence based.
