Net zero strategy
Eliminating and offsetting carbon emissions across the Property and Development NSW-owned office portfolio by 2030.
We manage the state’s significant property portfolio and work closely with our Government agency tenants to deliver quality, efficient and sustainable workplaces.
The NSW Government Net Zero Plan Stage 1: 2020–2030 aims to reduce emissions by 50% below 2005 levels by 2030.
We are committed to eliminating and offsetting operational carbon emissions at Government-owned sites by 2030 through building sustainability programs and practices. Our operational emissions include both direct emissions from our activities, as well as emissions resulting from the electricity that we consume at our sites.
In our Net Zero Strategic Action Plan (PDF 2.1MB), we commit to cutting our operational emissions by at least 75% by 2030, compared to our baseline year of 2019, and achieving net zero emissions by 2050. Our Environmental Management Group leads this work.
The plan includes:
- rolling out more rooftop solar panel systems
- utilising smart building technologies, such as sensors that measure the temperature and air quality in our buildings
- installing energy efficient LED lighting and lighting controls
- electrifying our buildings, removing the need for gas
- installing batteries that store renewable energy to use at times when the power grid is low on renewables.

Next steps
While we have achieved net zero, there's always room for improvement.
We will continue finding ways to efficiently operate our buildings, generate more of our energy requirements from renewable energy, and address other emission sources, reducing our need to purchase carbon offsets.
We will also continue collaborating with other Government agencies to multiply benefits towards our shared net zero goal.
