Come behind the scenes at Queanbeyan Hospital and spend the day with Andrew and Steve from the Asset Management team.
There aren’t many corners of Queanbeyan Hospital that Andrew McLaughlin and Steve Vosnakes haven’t seen. Between them, they’ve spent decades making sure the hospital stays safe, functional and welcoming for everyone who walks through its doors.
Andrew has worked in maintenance at Queanbeyan Hospital for more than 20 years. His connection to Southern runs deep - his father, uncle and other family members all worked at Goulburn Hospital, where Andrew started his career, too.
“It’s been in the family for a while,” Andrew says. “For many years.”
Steve, the acting maintenance manager, has been with the team for five years. A carpenter by trade, he describes himself as a “jack of all trades,” always ready to lend a hand wherever it’s needed.
Together, Andrew and Steve start each day with a walk around the hospital, checking plant rooms and chatting with staff.
“Sometimes you can pick up an issue before it actually becomes an issue—just off a noise,” Andrew explains
From fixing doors and replacing lights to unblocking drains and maintaining equipment, their work touches every part of the hospital.
Southern Stars - Andrew and Steve, Asset Management
Come behind the scenes at Queanbeyan Hospital and spend the day with Andrew and Steve from the Asset Management team.
They’re also a familiar face to staff. “We go around and see everybody, just say good morning,” Andrew says. “Check that they don’t have any issues that popped up overnight.”
Andrew’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was nominated for Corporate Support Staff Member of the Year at Southern’s Excellence Awards in 2025, and for Southern Staff Member of the Year in 2019.
“People probably see us around all the time,” Steve says. “Half the time they probably think we’re just walking around with a clipboard trying to look busy - but we’re actually making sure things are ticking along.”
Andrew agrees. “We’re not just fixing things - we’re helping people do their jobs. If a nurse can get through their shift without worrying about a broken door or a leaking tap, that’s a win.”
Steve adds, “If I can do one little thing to make a nurse’s life easier, then I feel like I’ve done something.”
“You get that satisfaction because you know that you’ve made a difference.”
