Opportunities for studying Aboriginal Languages
NSW schools introducing Aboriginal Languages programs can work to support their long-term success. They can do this by working in partnership with their local Aboriginal Community(ies).
Students in NSW schools can study Aboriginal Languages from Kindergarten to Year 12.
Kindergarten to Year 10
The Aboriginal Languages K–10 Syllabus (2022) can be taught:
- in schools with a K–6 Language program
- for mandatory 100 hours of Language study in Years 7–10
- for 100-hour and 200-hour elective Language courses in Years 7–10
- for Language courses based on Life Skills outcomes and content.
Years 11 to 12
Students in Years 11–12 can study the Aboriginal Languages Stage 6 Syllabus (2015).
Community partnerships support learning
Schools need to work with Aboriginal Communities to implement Aboriginal Languages syllabuses. Expertise and guidance from Aboriginal Knowledge Holders, Custodians and stakeholders is required. Ongoing Community consultation is needed when developing and delivering teaching and learning programs. This supports classroom teachers and student learning outcomes.
