Early Childhood Education and Care

The Identifying and Including Children with Additional Needs (IICAN) course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to identify children who may need additional support, understand different types of disabilities and explore ways to apply inclusive practices. It is free for participants who work in an Early Childhood Education and Care (ECEC) role.

Course outcomes

• Recognise key indicators
• Understand a range of disabilities
• Work in a family-centred team approach
• Apply universal design principles to support children.

Learning topics

The workshop covers four learning topics:

Topic 1

• Understand developmental milestones
• Identify red flags in children’s milestone development
• Understand contextual factors that influence development

Topic 2

• Understanding developmental delays
• Gain knowledge on different types of disabilities
• Talking with families

Topic 3

• Understand how to work in a family centred collaborative team
• Consider how to get supportUnderstand 
• how to facilitate access to services

 Topic 4

• Applying universal learning design
• Ensuring inclusive learning environments
• Using evidenced based strategies to support inclusion
