The Higher Education Apprenticeship Pathway apprenticeship:
- Can be established where:
- an academic institution has established a partnership with a registered training provider to deliver an apprenticeship qualification as an elective option in a higher education study program approved by the Commissioner for Vocational Training
- a higher education student, opts to undertake an apprenticeship qualification as an elective option in their academic study and has obtained apprenticeship employment with and appropriate employer
- an academic student has obtained an appropriate apprenticeship and undertakes an apprenticeship qualification as part of an approved course credit/effective option in an academic study program.
- Has the same obligations for the apprentice and apprenticeship employer under an award or industrial instrument and the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act2001 in NSW.
Combination of Part-time or Full-time work
The Higher Education Apprenticeship Pathway provides for a combination of part-time and full-time apprenticeship employment with a term that takes regard of existing part-time apprenticeship provisions in an apprenticeship Vocational Training Order, with provision for:
- A term of training up to 72 months, or until the apprenticeship training is completed, based on a minimum of 21 hours part-time paid employment per week.
- A minimum of 21 hours per week part-time paid employment per week. These hours can be averaged over a four week period.
- Part-time and/or full-time apprenticeship employment and workplace training undertaken during University vacation periods.
Training Plan
A Training Plan signed by the apprentice, the apprenticeship employer and registered training organisation involved in the delivery of the apprenticeship qualification must be prepared to outline:
- Details of proposed on-the-job training, during periods of part-time and/or full-time work with the apprenticeship employer;
- The pattern of attendance of any off-the-job and on-the-job training accommodated within the apprentice’s an academic study timetable.
- An agreed mechanism to schedule and record the completion of apprenticeship training delivery.
- Any agreed resources to assist the employer in providing evidence to the RTO concerning an apprentice’s workplace training.
Completion of a Higher Education Apprenticeship Pathway
The Higher Education Apprenticeship Pathway is successfully completed when both the on-the-job training and apprenticeship qualification detailed in the approved apprenticeship training plan is completed. Apprentices who have completed the term of an apprenticeship and an appropriate qualification for the trade concerned are issued with a Certificate of Proficiency in the trade by the Commissioner for Vocational Training.
Licensing and the Higher Education Apprenticeship Pathway in the Electrotechnology Electrician trade vocation
Persons who have successfully completed a Higher Education Apprenticeship Pathway in the Electrotechnology Electrician trade vocation may be eligible for an electrical licence subject to the demonstration mandatory electrical wiring work experience.
Electrical wiring work experience means:
- Experience lawfully gained by the applicant (whether during or after completion of an Apprenticeship) as a bona fide employee who has been paid during the relevant period of employment in accordance with an award or enterprise agreement.
- Experience verified by a qualified electrical supervisor/electrical contractor.
- At least 12 months electrical wiring work experience utilising knowledge and understanding of the AS/NZS 3000:2007 in the residential, commercial and/or industrial areas required by NSW Fair Trading ‘Referee’s Statement Electrical Work’[Pdf 80Kb].
