Streetwise Program

• Applicants must be a local council within NSW. 
• Applicants can only submit one application for up to $200,000 in funding. 

Eligible projects

• Projects must be designed in response to an identified road safety issue in the area.   
• Projects must demonstrate the need for interventions proposed.  
• Projects must align with a relevant council strategy e.g. Pedestrian Access and Mobility Plan.   

Eligible project locations

• Projects must be located within existing or proposed low-speed zone areas (i.e. 10-40km/h) that:
  • Is classified as a local, unclassified road.
  • Has an economic hub/mix of businesses.
  • Projects must be located on the road reserve/carriageway or directly adjacent to the existing or proposed low-speed zone areas, and will be prioritised by zones (Refer to Diagram 1 in Guidelines).

Eligible project types

Funding may be used for:

• Public Art – e.g. asphalt art, murals, window decals.  
• Lighting – e.g. lighting that improves both ambience and pedestrian safety, including creative, colourful, festoon or bulb lighting, projection lighting. 
• Greening and urban landscaping – e.g. planter boxes, trees, flower/garden beds to enhance streetscape and slow traffic.
• Street furniture and parklets - e.g. places to dwell, rest and socialise. Benches, shelters, bike racks, outdoor dining space, parklets.
• Wayfinding Signage – e.g. clear directional and information signage for people walking, riding and driving, other wayfinding visual cues that and enhance local place identity and help orientate and navigate the street.
• Temporary / semi-permanent (e.g. removable) or permanent conversion of parking spaces to public spaces.

The following project types not eligible for funding, unless an exemption request is completed by council and approved by Transport for NSW: 

• Traffic calming e.g. barriers, bollards, pedestrian refuges, kerb blisters, path widening.
• Cycleways e.g. pop up or permanent cycle lanes.  

The following applications are ineligible for funding:

• Temporary or permanent change to the direction of traffic of the identified zone (unless it can be demonstrated with certainty that project completion can be achieved by February 2028).
• Partial closure of the street, either temporary or permanent, (unless it can be demonstrated with certainty that project completion can be achieved by February 2028)
• Any project delivered outside the existing or proposed low-speed zone area, including on adjacent streets or laneways to the low-speed zone area. 
• Any project delivered on any road type other than unclassified local road. 
• Projects that involve major permanent capital works. 
• Funding for works that are part of council’s ongoing maintenance and management of a site. 
• Existing staffing costs, including salaries or staff expenses, or any staffing costs directly associated with the delivery of the project that have not been approved by Transport for NSW. 
• Projects requiring ongoing funding from the NSW Government, or retrospective funding to cover any project component that is already complete or underway. 
• Retrospective funding to cover any project component that is already complete or underway before the funding offer is made.
• Purchase or lease of land or property.
