Project overview
The NSW Government has committed $93 million for capital investment in the World Class End of Life Care program to redevelop and refurbish palliative care facilities across NSW.
Nepean, Orange, Tamworth, Westmead and Wyong hospitals were selected as the 5 sites for the program.
Benefits
The program will:
- Deliver more palliative care beds for people requiring short-term, high-care beds in rural, regional and metropolitan hospitals.
- Improve access to palliative care in Western Sydney with two new, dedicated palliative care units in Westmead and Nepean.
- Boost hospital capacity and implement best-practice models for supportive and palliative care
Improve access to pain management services for patients with life-limiting illness, to help patients and their family and carers. - Improve services for people with late stage chronic and degenerative conditions, and cancer.
- Support consumer choice and excellence in end-of-life and palliative care.
- Strengthen virtual care, transport and equipment programs.
Scope
Tamworth Hospital’s plans to expand the Nioka Palliative Care unit, taking the total number of beds from six to 12. The new part of the facility will feature six palliative care bedrooms with ensuites, communal areas, meeting spaces and flexible outdoor spaces.

At Westmead, the new 15-bed unit will include bedrooms with ensuites, communal spaces, a multi-faith room and direct access to a shared outdoor area from the bedrooms. This facility will occupy a rooftop area within the Clinical Acute Services Building, designed to offer privacy and access to complementary health services within Westmead Hospital.
At Nepean Hospital, 16 bedrooms with ensuites will be built on the top floor of the new Stage 2 building which is currently under construction. The new unit includes a rooftop courtyard and family-orientated, shared spaces aimed at creating a supportive, inclusive setting for patients and their loved ones.

An existing building at Wyong Hospital will be remodelled to provide a new palliative care unit featuring 12 bedrooms with ensuites, communal family areas, meeting spaces and flexible outdoor spaces.
Orange Health Service has expanded its current palliative care services by adding three new palliative care rooms on level one, featuring support spaces and an enclosed courtyard to complement its existing facilities. This facility is now open.
