General enquiries
What is the National Innovation visa?
The National Innovation visa (subclass 858) is a permanent visa for exceptionally talented people who can help create jobs and grow Australia’s economy — like top researchers, entrepreneurs, innovative investors, athletes, and creatives.
Only the Australian Government (Home Affairs) can grant this visa. To apply, you must first be nominated by an eligible nominator — like a state or territory government (for example, NSW). If your nomination is approved and Home Affairs invites you, you can then apply for the visa.
Learn more about the National Innovation visa on the Home Affairs website.
Does NSW charge a fee for nomination?
No — there’s no fee to submit a Registration of Interest (ROI) or to apply for NSW nomination for the National Innovation visa.
If you’re invited to apply for the visa itself, you’ll need to pay the relevant visa application fee to Home Affairs. You can check current visa fees on the Home Affairs website.
Does NSW nomination guarantee I’ll be invited to apply for the visa?
No — a nomination from NSW does not guarantee that you’ll be granted the National Innovation visa. Only Home Affairs can grant the visa, and they make the final decision.
What’s the benefit of being nominated by NSW?
A nomination from NSW does more than just meet a basic requirement — it gives you real advantages.
- Priority: Applicants nominated by NSW get the second-highest visa processing priority — behind only winners of top global awards like a Nobel Prize.
- Prestige: NSW’s nomination process is rigorous and holistic. Every nomination is a mark of distinction, backed by expert review and, if needed, independent endorsements from leaders in your field.
- Partnership: NSW isn’t just a nominator — it’s your first strategic partner in Australia. If you’re nominated, you’ll be connected with networks and support to help you make your best contribution.
Where do I find more information about this visa?
For official information about the National Innovation visa — including eligibility, processing times, visa conditions and application fees — always check the official Home Affairs website. We strongly recommend reading the official requirements carefully before you apply.
Do I need a representative?
You don’t need to use a representative to submit an ROI or apply for NSW nomination. However, if you’re unsure about your eligibility or what’s required, you may wish to seek advice from a registered migration professional.
Eligibility
Who will NSW consider nominating for the National Innovation visa?
NSW will consider individuals who meet the published criteria for one of our five pathways: Researchers & Academics, Entrepreneurs, Innovative Investors, Sports Professionals or Creative Professionals.
Check the Pathways page for the detailed criteria for each stream. All nomination decisions are underpinned by the Home Affairs, which sets out how exceptional and outstanding talent is assessed.
Where can I find the eligibility criteria?
You can find all eligibility criteria for NSW nomination on our Pathways page. Each pathway explains exactly what we look for — and what evidence you’ll need if you’re invited to apply.
How do I know if I meet the criteria?
Each pathway sets out the qualities we look for — but there’s no simple score or checklist. You’ll need to show clear, credible evidence that you’re exceptional in your field, internationally recognised, and ready to make a meaningful contribution to NSW.
We strongly recommend reading the detailed Pathways page and our Guide to submitting your ROI before you decide to submit.
Do I need to live in NSW to be nominated?
You don’t need to live in NSW to be nominated — but you do need to show clear reasons for choosing NSW and real work you’ve already undertaken to build connections here.
NSW nomination shouldn’t be the first step in your migration journey — it’s one of the final ones. We expect you to demonstrate genuine ties, credible plans and relationships that show you’re serious about living and contributing here.
Submitting a Registration of Interest (ROI)
Where can I find out what information is asked for in the ROI form?
You can find a clear breakdown of what we ask for in the ROI in our Guide to submitting your ROI. We strongly recommend reading it before you start — so you know exactly what details you’ll need to provide and what evidence you’ll need if you’re invited to apply.
Can I edit my ROI after I submit it?
No — once you submit your ROI, you can’t change it. Make sure every detail is accurate and complete before you submit.
Can I submit an ROI for more than one pathway?
No — you can only have one active ROI at a time.
If you think you could be eligible under more than one pathway, we strongly recommend reading our Guide to submitting your ROI to decide which pathway best fits your background and impact — then apply under that one.
How many ROIs can I have at once?
You can only have one active ROI at a time. If you’re not invited to apply, you’ll need to wait until your ROI expires before you can submit another one.
How long is an ROI valid for?
ROIs stay valid for six months from the date you submit it. If you’re not invited to apply during that time, your ROI will expire — and you’ll need to submit a new one if you still want to be considered.
What happens if my ROI is not invited?
If your ROI is not invited within six months, it will expire automatically. We’ll send you an email to let you know when it expires — and once it has, you’ll be able to submit a new ROI if you still meet the criteria.
Will NSW give me feedback on my ROI?
No — NSW cannot provide individual feedback on ROIs.
If you’re unsure whether you meet the nomination criteria, you may wish to discuss your situation with a registered migration professional before you submit.
Applying for NSW nomination
What happens if I’m invited to apply?
If your ROI is selected, you’ll receive an invitation email with a link to submit a full application. At this stage, you’ll need to provide evidence for every claim you made in your ROI.
We strongly recommend reading our Guide to supporting documents before you’re invited — so you know exactly what to prepare.
You’ll have 21 days to submit your application once you receive the link. The link will not be reissued if it expires, so make sure you’re ready.
What happens if I don’t apply within 21 days?
If you don’t submit your full application within 21 days, your invitation link will expire and can’t be reissued. To be considered again, you’ll need to submit a new ROI and go through the process from the start.
How long does an application for NSW nomination take to assess?
Once you submit your full application (after you’ve been invited), there’s no fixed timeframe because the complexity of applications can vary.
However, we aim to assess most complete applications within six weeks.
What documents do I need to provide with my application for NSW nomination?
You’ll need to provide evidence for every claim you made in your ROI. We strongly recommend reading our Guide to supporting documents — it explains exactly what you’ll need to prepare for your full nomination application.
Does my application have to match my ROI?
Yes — your ROI was shortlisted and invited based on the information you provided. It’s essential that your full application matches what you claimed and that you can back every claim with credible evidence.
A successful outcome depends on this — if your application doesn’t match your ROI, we may not be able to approve your nomination.
What happens after NSW approves my nomination?
If your nomination is approved, we’ll sign your Form 1000 and provide you with a letter of recommendation from the NSW Government. You’ll include both with your Expression of Interest (EOI) when you submit it to Home Affairs.
