Reduce the risk of a shark encounter
The New South Wales Government is committed to ensuring the community is as safe as possible when visiting the ocean. While shark encounters are rare, it's important to educate yourself and use the available tools to reduce the risk.
Download the SharkSmart app
Did you know there is a free app for iPhone, Android and Apple Watch devices that provides real-time shark alerts, information and resources for people using NSW beaches?
Download the SharkSmart app and customise alerts and features based on time, region, type of alert, or by beach.
You can get up-to-date information about:
- detections of tagged sharks via the listening stations along the NSW coast
- sharks observed by the drones operated by Surf Life Saving NSW
- target sharks (White, Tiger and Bull sharks) tagged and released by SMART drumlines
- marine animal strandings
- other beach safety issues.
There are also maps showing where you are in relation to the general location of beaches with shark mitigation gear and information about sharks and other marine creatures, including images of dangerous and non-dangerous marine animals that sting and bite.
