Gundagai's North Common is a picturesque and historically significant area nestled between two flowing waterways — the Murrumbidgee River and Morley's Creek — as they pass through the town. Spanning this expansive floodplain is the iconic Historic Railway Viaduct, a striking reminder of Gundagai's heritage and engineering legacy. This area also marks the site of the original Gundagai township, which was tragically destroyed in the Great Flood of 1852 — one of Australia's most devastating natural disasters. While many lives were lost, the heroic efforts of Wiradjuri men Yarri and Jacky Jacky saved numerous townspeople, an act that remains deeply respected to this day. Memorial cairns now stand on the Gundagai Common, commemorating the flood, the lost township, and the bravery shown during that time, offering a powerful connection to Gundagai's past. It is also the site of extreme Aboriginal significance with Bora Bora Rings and other cultural landmarks which played a major part in the local Wiradjuri culture. Explore the beauty of the landscape by taking a stroll along the river under the historic bridges or discover more about the local Wiradjuri culture or simply just take in the wide-open spaces.
