Iandra offers a remarkable insight into the early days of Australian agriculture. In 1878, George Greene purchased the 32,000-acre property and soon emerged as a visionary farming pioneer. He introduced and championed the concept of share farming in Australia, leaving a lasting legacy on both the agricultural landscape and the local community. The first homestead, Mt Oriel, was constructed in 1880 using bricks fired on-site. In 1908, Greene began an ambitious transformation of the property, replacing the original home with a groundbreaking two-storey reinforced concrete mansion — one of the first of its kind successfully built in Australia. This grand structure, complete with stables, still stands today as a testament to early innovation in building techniques. The mansion boasts 53 rooms and was ahead of its time, featuring flushing toilets, running hot water, and an internal telephone system — rare luxuries in rural Australia at the time.
