Mount Panorama/Wahluu is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Bathurst region. Known to the Wiradjuri people as Wahluu, meaning "to watch over" it was traditionally a place where young Wiradjuri men observed their land and the movement of travellers in and out of the valley. In the 1930s, Mayor Martin Griffin and Bathurst Council envisioned creating a premier motor racing circuit. Although initial funding for a racetrack was declined under the federal Depression-era employment relief program, support was later secured for the construction of a scenic drive—laying the foundation for what would become the circuit. The first races were held in 1938 and have taken place annually ever since. Today, many visitors are surprised to discover that, outside of race and community events, the circuit doubles as a public scenic drive open year-round. Visitors can also enjoy the Mount Panorama Scenic Boardwalk and Lookout, offering the chance to step out and take in sweeping views over Bathurst, providing a fresh perspective on the region.
