Where History Comes to Life.
Wander through the historic grounds of Old Dubbo Gaol where the origins of a courthouse lockup in 1847 evolved over time as the town and region grew alongside the crimes brought about by greed, hunger and poverty. The latest exhibitions are immersive displays that share stories of suffering and loneliness for even the most hardened criminals. Walk alongside the gallows gallery to see the extensive collection of hangman’s kits overlooking the condemned prisoners’ whose crimes sent them to the gallows.
Their captivating theatrical performances and daily talks take a comical spin on the hardships of penal life to inspire curious minds through stories of botched breakouts and adventurous feats in their efforts to reclaim freedom.
