Being modern in layout and fit-out, the museum showcases the town and district and the history of the lower Macquarie River. There are displayed objects pertinent to the museum's overarching theme. More information is available through interactive screens, and there is a surround audio/visual immersive experience, which, they believe, is a unique occurrence outside of a major city. In addition to the museum, there is a new, purpose-built building which is primarily an art gallery but is a multifunctional space for art exhibitions, music performances and temporary exhibitions of museum objects and the district's history. It has been in continuous use since it opened in March 2023. The gallery is open to all artists to exhibit their works.
