Overview of this event
If you've never been to a country cattle sale, Gunnedah is the place to start. Home to one of NSW's largest stock selling centres, the Gunnedah Saleyards is where boots hit the dust, cattle move in waves, and auctioneers unleash their famous chant – fast, fiery, and full of flair.
Fun fact: they don't actually speak that fast. According to world champion auctioneer Brandon Neely, it's all about rhythm and filler words – a clever mix of function and theatre. It's psychology in motion, and it's seriously exciting to watch.
Located just 1km from town on the Kamilaroi Highway, the saleyards recently underwent a $17.55 million upgrade, making them one of the most modern in the state. With EU accreditation, large buyer pools, and earthing yards that reduce stress for travelling cattle, it's no wonder prices here consistently rank among the best in NSW.
Every Tuesday, 12 livestock agents move thousands of prime beef cattle, with the facility turning over more than $90 million annually and consistently yarding over 120,000 head each year. Around 50 locals are employed here, keeping the wheels of the beef economy turning.
Visitors are welcome – just follow the energy and the echo of the auctioneer's call.
