Artworks created by inmates from Long Bay Correctional Complex and Dillwynia Correctional Centre are taking pride of place at the Downing Centre courthouse in Sydney.
Forty-nine creations, including paintings, carvings and sculptures, are on display in the giant windows of the complex to mark Law Week.
Each artwork depicts a different theme – whether it’s speaking to family, going to courses, carrying out work or painting, or interiors of the prison itself.
“The inmates take so much pride in their work and knowing it’s on display and being admired in such a public place does a lot for their confidence,” Boom Gate Gallery art officer Damian Moss says.
“Some inmates have sold their work – usually to lawyers or judges because that’s the passing crowd – and they love buying these works.
“They’ll often call the gallery when they’re making a purchase and speak of the excellent quality of the piece.”
The show runs until the end of May 2023. Any sales enquiries can be directed to boomgategallery@justice.nsw.gov.au.
