Have your say on a place name in Sydney LGA
The Geographical Names Board (GNB) is seeking community feedback on a proposal by Waterloo Collective, Mirvac to name an urban place in the suburb of Waterloo as Badumurru Place.
The proposed urban place is located at 140-150 Cope Street, Waterloo in the Sydney Local Government Area.
The area is being developed as a publicly accessible space and pedestrian throughfare within the Waterloo Metro Quarter.
The proposed name Badumurru Place (pronounced Bah-doo-Moor-roo) is derived from the Gadigal language, combining the words Badu (water) and Murru (path). It reflects the Gadigal people's deep relationship with Country and traditional practices of movement, gathering, and connections. The name acknowledges the cultural and environmental significance of the wetlands and waterways historically connected to the Waterloo and Redfern areas.
GNB is seeking feedback to gauge community sentiment for the proposed name and suggestions for alternative names are not being sought at this time.
Details of the proposal can be viewed and submissions lodged on the Geographical Names Board's website.
Alternatively, written submissions may be mailed to:
The Secretary, Geographical Names Board, 346 Panorama Ave, Bathurst, NSW 2795.
The closing date for submissions is 26 October 2025.
Quotes to be attributed to NSW Surveyor-General Narelle Underwood:
"Community consultation on the proposed name is an important step to ensure that each voice has a chance to contribute."
"The GNB is committed to the preservation and promotion of Aboriginal languages and acknowledging Aboriginal culture through place naming in NSW."
