Networks & Associations

NSW is home to a wide range of industry networks and associations that foster collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and partnerships across the innovation ecosystem.

These connections strengthen NSW’s position as a global hub for technology and innovation, helping businesses scale faster and compete on the world stage.

Space Industry Association of Australia

The Space Industry Association of Australia (SIAA) is the peak body representing Australia’s space sector, advocating for policies and initiatives that strengthen the industry’s growth and global competitiveness.

SIAA serves as the unified voice of more than 600 organisations across government, industry, academia, and research, ensuring that the priorities of Australia’s space community are heard by decision-makers at state, national, and international levels.

The association’s advocacy is highlighted through hosting IAC 2025, connecting global leaders, showcasing Australian capabilities, and positioning the nation at the centre of international space collaboration.

Defence Innovation Network

The Defence Innovation Network (DIN) is a university-led initiative supported by the NSW Government and the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG). It brings together nine leading universities from NSW and the ACT to drive defence and aerospace-relevant R&D, and to elevate Australia’s contributions to national and international security.

Defence Innovation Network space initiatives

At its core, the DIN’s role is to connect academia, government, industry, and defence to align research capabilities with defence and aerospace priorities, and convert innovation into deployed technologies. Through its grant programs the DIN also funds cross-disciplinary research that can mature technologies into dual-use prototypes within 12–24 months.

To date, the network has mobilised over $10 million in direct funding, facilitated more than $100 million in external investment, and hosted more than 50 industry-engagement events, solidifying its impact on defence and aerospace innovation in NSW.

NSW Smart Sensing Network

The NSW Smart Sensing Network (NSSN) connects researchers, industry, and government to develop sensing technologies with clear commercial and policy applications.

NSW Smart Sensing Network's various sensing technology initiatives

Funded by the NSW Government through the Office of the Chief Scientist & Engineer, the network ensures that research effort is directed toward state and industry priorities. The NSSN focuses on five key areas:

  • net zero;
  • smart places;
  • natural hazards;
  • human health; and
  • environment & agriculture.

The network supports projects beyond early funding by guiding teams toward additional investment, industry partnerships, and measurable outcomes.

Through its annual Grand Challenge Fund, the NSSN invests up to $100,000 in collaborative projects, helping ideas progress from laboratory stage toward real-world deployment.
