Local Land Services can supply native seed to landholders in the Murray region of NSW.

Benefits of native seed harvesting

Local Land Services (LLS) recognises that using local, native seed maintains the unique genetic characteristics of local plant populations, which can be important for their long-term survival.  

LLS has developed a seed bank service to collect and store local seed for use by Murray region landholders and nurseries.  

LLS matches the most suitable plant species and revegetation methods to site locations, climate, soil and vegetation type. This gives the greatest chance of building a healthy, resilient ecosystem.  

To increase the chances of success further, LLS include a range of different provenances (location origin) in seeding, including seed originating from dryer areas.  

Because LLS seed comes from the local area, it is already acclimatised to the Murray region’s variable climate and more likely to survive and thrive.

Murray Seed Services supporting revegetation

murray local land services is quite
unique in that we have a seed bank seed
collection seed cleaning facility where
we are able to process large amounts of
native plant seed each season for use in
re-vegetation projects and the facility
that we have allows us to be able to
re-vegetate large areas of lands both
public and private lands
so we go out and collect all of the seed
over the summer period from a range of
native plants that are local to the area
we bring all that seed back into our
facility here at dinilicon and we also
have a small facility at aubry where we
clean the seed and then store it in our
temperature and humidity controlled seed
bolt for use in revegetation projects
we can direct seed into pretty much any
soil our seeds are quite diverse we can
put them into quite heavy soils into
some sandy loam soils just depends once
again what the site is the benefits of
having that kind of facility is that we
can do large scale revegetation
efficiently and effectively we can get
large amounts of areas sewn down in
short periods of time we can seed at
about four kilometers per hour
so we can knock over 20-25 k's quite
easy in a day
our seed is the highest quality we have
a network of seed production areas that
we collect seed from to ensure that we
have good genetic diversity and good
species diversity so all of that goes
into our mixes and then we can sew those
into the ground with our direct seeding
machines
yeah we can have up to about eight or
ten different species at any given time
maybe more depends we put some eucalypts
in we put a lot of native vegetation
some salt bush if required so just
anything that the land highly requires
there can be combinations of techniques
to be able to get a really nice diverse
mix of plants into a site we can provide
advice to land holders and land managers
if they're interested in doing
re-vegetation work at all we can come
out and we can have a look at the site
we can give them advice on how to set up
a site what site preparation might be
needed what species that we can direct
seed in for them that suits their site
specifically and also potentially you
know what species are better suited for
tube stock planting we can give them
advice on management of that site as
well going forward and then provide the
service of the seed supply and the
direct seeding as well
once they're established it can change
the entire outlook of the landscape that
you're in so where you might be looking
at open paddock for miles after five
years and having that direct seating in
the ground you'll be looking at a
diverse mix of native plants you'll have
all of your woodland birds coming back
in all of that native wildlife that can
enjoy those areas
yes so we can do work around shelter
belts and connecting existing native
vegetation areas for biodiversity we can
sow old man salt bush pastures for
production we can also do enhancement of
existing native vegetation areas where
we might have a nice arrange of tree
species on a site but not necessarily
have any of that mid-story that shrub
kind of layer so we can come in and
enhance that by sewing all of that shrub
layer back into that site it's really
appealing to to look back and see what
we've done

some more diversity into the native
plants on your property you just need to

staff will be able to get in contact
with you we can come out and have a look
at your site and go from there

Types of native seed available 

Seeds are high quality, ethically sourced, local provenance guaranteed, native seed from the Murray region and surrounds. The range includes: 

  • Eucalypts 
  • Acacias 
  • Dodonaea 
  • Pines 
  • Saltbushes 
  • and many more. 

The LLS Murray Native Seed Service offers: 

  • direct seeding machine services 
  • seed sales 
  • project planning and design  
  • on-site preparation and layout advice   
  • weed and pest control advice for before and after planting 
  • high quality native seed, local and adapted to your area 
  • plant species selection and planting design recommendations. 

Individual guidance is available with on site preparation, follow-up advice and management to give your revegetation project every opportunity to flourish.  

Murray LLS’ native seed services can:  

  • improve the biodiversity of land 
  • reduce the impacts of land degradation 
  • create sustainable shelter for livestock 
  • generate habitat for native plants and animals 
  • improve existing native vegetation areas 
  • link fragmented remnant vegetation 
  • sow Old Man Saltbush pastures 
  • create shelter belts 
  • establish offset areas 
  • create carbon farming areas 
  • establish native vegetation for erosion control.

Seed production areas

Quality native seed is a vital resource in maintaining and restoring biodiversity. Healthy seed is critical for plant survival and is the first step in building healthy ecosystems.  

Seed is collected from a network of 17 purpose grown Seed Production Areas (SPAs) to ensure healthy, genetically diverse seed. LLS also collects on other public and private lands. SPAs are now our primary source of seed for all our revegetation projects.

Harvesting seed from SPAs has the following benefits:

  • remnant vegetation along roadsides and public land is left unharvested, allowing native wildlife (birds, ants and other insects) full access to the food resource
  • SPAs attract native birds and animals and become on-farm hotspots for wildlife.

SPAs, however, do need to be managed and maintained to keep them productive. The average productive life of shrub species planted in a SPA is between 10-12 years and this is excluding the 3-4 years it takes to establish before they become productive.

Over the past twenty years, LLS have improved the way SPAs are designed and select species provenances to enhance genetic diversity and resilience to climate change.

LLS seed collectors take pride in harvesting all seed sustainably and ethically to avoid damage to local ecosystems. Only the best and healthiest seed is collected, from a variety of plants and areas, never taking more than is needed. After harvesting, seed is cleaned and then stored in our climate and humidity-controlled seed vault to ensure its quality is maintained.  

LLS is able to provide detailed collection information so that you know where your seed was sourced from.
