Project overview
In order to protect the Australian swift parrot (Lathamus discolor), and the regent honeyeater (Anthochaera phrygia), Local Land Services (LLS) are leading and supporting:
- on ground works
- education programs.
This project built upon previous work completed by LLS under the NSW Government's Saving Our Species (SOS) program.
Nomadic Pollinators
Join Mick Budden and Jed Field as they explore the success story of transforming a former dairy farm into a thriving habitat for nomadic pollinators like the Swift Parrot and the Regent Honeyeater.
Project objectives
LLS' swift parrot and regent honeyeater project improved the survival of swift parrots and regent honeyeaters by:
- revegetating existing habitat and planting new habitat
- protecting winter-flowering mature feed trees
- educating landholders and the wider community about their role.
Project background
Swift parrots and the regent honeyeater are critically endangered Australian birds. It is estimated that less than 800 swift parrots and less than 400 regent honeyeaters live in the wild. Without conservation efforts, these iconic species could be extinct in as little as 16 years. Conservation efforts in the Central Coast are crucial to the species’ survival, as habitat loss and fragmentation caused by human activities have had a significant impact on their population.
The Central Coast of New South Wales is a critical habitat for the endangered swift parrot with a unique combination of native eucalypt forests and woodlands that have an abundance of flowering eucalypt trees, which produce the nectar that forms a vital part of the swift parrot’s diet. In addition to nectar, the Greater Sydney region's diverse flora and fauna supports the birds' other nutritional needs which include insects and fruits.
These ecosystems provide essential resources for foraging when the parrots migrate from Tasmania to the mainland during the autumn and winter months.
Project delivery
The project involved improvement and restoration of key box woodland and forest habitat by:
- strategic fencing
- revegetation works
- weed and pest animal control
- community education.
On-ground progress

LLS has completed to date:
- approximately 40 ha of primary weed control and project is on track to complete 40 ha of weed control maintenance
- approximately 8 ha of revegetation and revegetation maintenance
- 8 reports/mapping of baseline data
- 4 flora surveys
- 12 extension activities including:
- webinars
- guided birdwatching events
- workshops
- event stalls
- tree planting events.

LLS Natural Resource Management team recently hosted a workshop on the critically endangered swift parrot. Around 35 people attended, learning about how to help protect this beautiful bird species, including:
- weed control techniques
- vegetation identification
- tree planting.

Local Land Services have been supporting the team at Central Coast Wetlands - Pioneer Dairy to plant 100 trees that will increase habitat connections and provide foraging resources for the endangered swift parrot and regent honeyeater.

Project outcomes
“Where there were once weeds and open paddocks, we’re now seeing native trees maturing, more wildlife activity, and a healthier, more resilient wetland system.”
- Jed Field, Land Manager, Central Coast Wetlands - Pioneer Dairy
- 58 hectares of weed control in vital swift parrot habitat.
- 11 hectares revegetated with over 12,500 endemic native trees and shrubs planted.
- 28 community awareness events including:
- webinars
- guided birdwatching walks
- tree planting events
- workshops
- pop up stalls.
