The Forest Monitoring Steering Committee, chaired by the Natural Resources Commission, delivers annual and five yearly checks of data and evidence, and prepares annual progress reports. We will deliver the first five year assessment in 2027 in relation to the Private Native Forestry Monitoring Program.
Annual check of the evidence base
The PNF codes of practice released in May 2022 introduced a requirement for an annual check of the evidence base.

What we examine each year
We look at:
- emerging evidence about private native forestry, including new mapping and findings from monitoring, evaluation and research
- opportunities to improve the PNF MER Framework, including changes to monitoring priorities and data collection.
Results from each annual check appear in the PNF Monitoring Program annual progress report (PDF 8.02MB).
Formal assessment of data and evidence every five years
The PNF codes also require the Committee to assess data and evidence every five years.
The first assessment is due in 2027.
The formal assessment will flag rules in the PNF codes that may need to change and advise relevant Ministers. It will use the annual checks as well as other information.
Annual progress reports
We produce annual progress reports for the PNF Monitoring Program on behalf of the Committee.
These reports go to the NSW Government, Local Land Services, the Environment Protection Authority and the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water.
We have now released the third annual report, which outlines program delivery and progress for 2024–25.
