Completing Year 10 with an apprenticeship or traineeship

Completing education under special circumstances
Home schooling students may wish to undertake a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship. This pathway for completing Year 10 comes under 21B(5)(d) of the Education Act 1990.
The following information is a summary of the relevant section of the NSW Education Standard Authority's (NESA) Guidelines for Equivalent and Alternative Courses of Study (PDF 377.35KB). For full details please refer to Section 3.5 of the Guidelines.
Student eligibility requirements
To be eligible, you must:
- currently be registered for home schooling
- have completed Year 9
- be at least 15 years of age.
What you need before you start
You will need:
- a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship contract signed by the employer and your parent or caregiver
- a training plan proposal supported by the head teacher of the relevant section in TAFE NSW or Registered Training Organisation (RTO)
- an application form (DOCX 903.06KB).
Steps to apply
Step 1
The student needs to have a signed full-time apprenticeship or traineeship contract.

Step 2
Notify the Department of Education Home Schooling directorate that you intend to seek approval to undertake a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship prior to completing Year 10.

Step 3
A Department of Education Authorised Person will be assigned and get in contact with you.
Step 4
Complete the application form (DOCX 903.06KB) and forward it to the Home Schooling directorate along with your required documents:
- full-time apprenticeship or traineeship contract signed by the employer and the student's parent/caregiver
- a training plan proposal supported by the head teacher of the relevant section in TAFE NSW or RTO.
Submit your application and documents by email to the Department of Education Home Schooling directorate to homeschooling@det.nsw.edu.au.
Step 5
If approved, the student receives a Certificate of exemption from being registered for home schooling. The Certificate is for the sole purpose of completing your education through a full-time apprenticeship or traineeship.
