Undertaking a Board Endorsed Alternative Education Program
Information on how young people registered for home schooling who wish to undertake a NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Board Endorsed Alternative Education Program may apply. Find out about eligibility, the steps to follow, and how the approval process works.
Alternative education programs and young people registered for home schooling
This information is for young people who are currently registered for home schooling. This pathway for completing Year 10 of secondary education comes under 21B(5)(d) & 23(2)(c) of the Education Act 1990.

Eligibility requirements
- These instructions are only for young people currently registered for home schooling.
- The parent or caregiver should already have contacted the relevant Board Endorsed Alternative Education Provider and established that a place is available for the young person.
- Approval from a Department of Education Authorised Person acting in lieu of a school principal will be required before proceeding with the application.

- Confirmation that a place is available for the young person in the relevant Board Endorsed Alternative Education Program.

Steps for young people registered for home schooling
Step 1
Notify the Department of Education Home Schooling directorate of the intention to undertake a Board Endorsed Alternative Education Program.

Information needed:
Confirmation that a place is available in the relevant Board Endorsed Alternative Education Program.
Step 2
A Department of Education Authorised Person will be assigned and will be in contact with you.
Step 3
Parent or caregiver to complete the application form (DOCX 902.66KB).

- Parent or caregiver details
- reasons for the application.
Step 4
Parent or caregiver to email the completed application and any additional supporting documentation to curriculum@nesa.nsw.edu.au.
Step 5
Authorised Person to contact parent or caregiver to discuss application, if necessary.
Step 6
If approved, the parent or caregiver will receive:
- Approval to undertake a Board Endorsed Alternative Education Program.
Please note you will need to refer to Section 3.3 of the Guidelines if this course is to be used for completion of Year 10.
Step 7
Parent or caregiver to use the Approval to undertake Board Endorsed Alternative Education in the course provider's enrolment process.
