Sample work Dance Stage 5: Performance
Work samples aligned to grades assist teachers to develop their understanding of the achievement standards at each grade level.
Description of activity
Students perform a dance work demonstrating an application of technique and sustained performance quality to achieve an interpretation of a concept or intent.
Context
Students have an understanding of dance techniques and performance quality and they have performed a range of dances in a variety of styles. They have an understanding of safe dance practices.
Outcomes
A student:
- 5.1.1 demonstrates an understanding of safe dance practice and appropriate dance technique with increasing skill and complexity in the performance of combinations, sequences and dances
- 5.1.2 demonstrates enhanced dance technique by manipulating aspects of the elements of dance
- 5.1.3 demonstrates an understanding and application of aspects of performance quality and interpretation through performance.
Criteria for assessing learning
(These criteria would normally be communicated to students with the activity.)
Students will be assessed on their ability to:
- demonstrate sustained performance quality (line, projection, commitment and kinaesthetic awareness) to communicate concept/intent
- demonstrate dance techniques (strength, flexibility, coordination, endurance and skill) to communicate concept/idea
- control and manipulate space, time and dynamics
- demonstrate safe dance practice.

Work sample feedback
Nicky
Nicky has demonstrated a very high level of competence in using dance techniques and sustained performance quality to communicate a concept or intent. Complex skills including turns, jumps, balances, off-centre tilts, leg extensions and aerial movement transference of weight have been used.
Nicky has sustained the dance technique throughout the performance, demonstrating strength, endurance, flexibility and coordination. Consistent focus and projection enhances the interpretation. Nicky has moved through the space purposefully, with a sense of commitment and a very high level of competence in manipulating the elements of dance. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade A standard.
Kerry
Kerry has demonstrated a high level of competence in using dance techniques and sustained performance quality to communicate a concept or intent. There is consistent control of a range of simple skills with temporal and dynamic variation. Neat, clean lines with an outward focus have been used. The elements of dance have been controlled through the use of space and tempo variation.
There are some inconsistencies in controlling ankle alignment but the straightforward sequencing of skills and simple transitions allow for safe performance of the movement. A high performance quality is evident but there is a sense of completing the steps rather than interpreting the movement. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.
Indra
Indra has demonstrated a high level of competence in using dance techniques and sustained performance quality to communicate a concept or intent. A range of skills with some complex sequences have been performed. Temporal and dynamic variations have been controlled, and there is a sense of projection and interpretation which enhances the performance.
Indra's movement has been safely aligned despite inconsistencies in the placement of the supporting foot in landings from jumps. Clean lines are seen through the upper torso with inconsistencies in the lower body. Consistent commitment and focus are evident. This work sample demonstrates characteristics of work typically produced by a student performing at grade B standard.
