2016 Aboriginal Studies HSC exam paper
Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the exam paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future exams. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written exam
Questions 1–10
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- understanding key course issues and concepts
- understanding the socio-economic indicators that affect Aboriginal peoples
- understanding the term sovereignty in regard to Aboriginal and other Indigenous peoples
- knowledge of media representations of Aboriginal Australians
- understanding the difficulties for Aboriginal peoples in accessing human rights
- referring to sources in the response.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- recognising an initiative that has improved Aboriginal peoples’ political status
- understanding the significance of achieving the recognition of sovereignty
- integrating the source more effectively into the response.
Questions 11–16
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- identifying the indicators used to measure changes
- identifying similarities and differences between Australian Aboriginal and International Indigenous communities.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- explicitly identifying the chosen Australian Aboriginal and International Indigenous community
- referring to both the Australian Aboriginal community and international Indigenous communities in sufficient detail.
Question 17
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- making reference to two communities and two of the topics
- focusing on the achievement of social equality for Australian Aboriginal and International Indigenous peoples.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- naming a specific Australian Aboriginal community
- linking achievement of social equality to the two chosen communities
- using evidence to substantiate a response rather than making generalisations.
Question 18 – Research and inquiry methods
Candidates showed strength in these areas:
- identifying the consequences of not acknowledging ownership of Aboriginal art
- linking specific processes to effective and genuine community consultation.
Candidates need to improve in these areas:
- integrating the source more effectively into the response.
