Course performance descriptors for Aboriginal Studies
Course performance descriptors for Aboriginal Studies 7–10 (2020) provide holistic descriptions of typical achievement at different grade levels. Course performance descriptions are used to identify and report a student’s level of achievement in a Board Developed Course at the end of Stage 5.
Grade A
A student at this grade typically:
- demonstrates extensive knowledge and understanding of factors that contribute to an Aboriginal person’s identity, and ways in which Aboriginal Peoples’ identities are maintained
- demonstrates extensive knowledge and understanding of the dynamic nature of Aboriginal cultures and cultural expression, and the importance of families and communities to Aboriginal Peoples
- provides a comprehensive explanation of the importance of self-determination and autonomy for Aboriginal Peoples nationally and internationally
- assesses extensively the significance of Aboriginal Peoples’ ongoing local, regional, national and international roles, and a wide range of relationships with non-Aboriginal peoples
- provides a comprehensive analysis of factors that influence non-Aboriginal peoples’ range of perceptions of Aboriginal Peoples and cultures, and the effects of these perceptions
- demonstrates comprehensive knowledge of ethical practices and appropriate protocols, and their application in undertaking research and community consultation
- displays sophisticated research skills and effectively communicates information and findings, using a range of techniques and technologies.
Grade B
A student at this grade typically:
- demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of factors that contribute to an Aboriginal person’s identity, and ways in which Aboriginal Peoples’ identities are maintained
- demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of the dynamic nature of Aboriginal cultures and cultural expression, and the importance of families and communities to Aboriginal Peoples
- provides a thorough explanation of the importance of self-determination and autonomy for Aboriginal Peoples nationally and internationally
- assesses the significance of Aboriginal Peoples’ ongoing local, regional, national and international roles, and a range of relationships with non-Aboriginal peoples
- analyses factors that influence non-Aboriginal peoples’ range of perceptions of Aboriginal Peoples and cultures, and the effects of these perceptions
- demonstrates high-level knowledge of ethical practices and appropriate protocols, and their application in undertaking research and community consultation
- displays high-level research skills and effectively communicates information and findings, using a range of techniques and technologies.
Grade C
A student at this grade typically:
- demonstrates sound knowledge and understanding of factors that contribute to an Aboriginal person’s identity, and ways in which Aboriginal Peoples’ identities are maintained
- demonstrates sound knowledge and understanding of the dynamic nature of Aboriginal cultures and cultural expression, and the importance of families and communities to Aboriginal Peoples
- explains the importance of self-determination and autonomy for Aboriginal Peoples nationally and/or internationally
- explains the significance of Aboriginal Peoples’ ongoing local, regional, national and/or international roles, and a range of relationships with non-Aboriginal peoples
- explains factors that influence non-Aboriginal peoples’ range of perceptions of Aboriginal peoples and cultures, and the effects of these perceptions
- demonstrates sound knowledge of ethical practices and appropriate protocols in undertaking research and community consultation
- displays sound research skills and communicates information and findings, using appropriate techniques and/or technologies.
Grade D
A student at this grade typically:
- demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of factors that contribute to an Aboriginal person’s identity, and/or ways in which Aboriginal Peoples’ identities are maintained
- demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of the changing nature of Aboriginal cultures and cultural expression, and/or the importance of families and communities to Aboriginal Peoples
- describes the importance of self-determination and/or autonomy for Aboriginal Peoples
- outlines Aboriginal Peoples’ ongoing local, regional, national and/or international roles, and a range of relationships with non-Aboriginal peoples
- outlines factors that influence non-Aboriginal peoples’ range of perceptions of Aboriginal Peoples and cultures, and identifies the effects of these perceptions
- demonstrates basic knowledge of ethical practices and/or appropriate protocols for undertaking research and community consultation
- displays basic skills to research and communicate information, using basic techniques and/or technologies.
Grade E
A student at this grade typically:
- demonstrates elementary knowledge and understanding of factors that contribute to an Aboriginal person’s identity, and/or identifies ways in which Aboriginal Peoples’ identities are maintained
- demonstrates elementary knowledge and understanding of aspects of Aboriginal cultures and cultural expression, and/or identifies the importance of families and communities to Aboriginal Peoples
- identifies the importance of self-determination and/or autonomy for Aboriginal Peoples
- identifies aspects of Aboriginal Peoples’ ongoing local, regional, national and/or international roles, and/or identifies a range of relationships with non-Aboriginal peoples
- recognises the factors that influence non-Aboriginal peoples’ range of perceptions of Aboriginal Peoples and cultures
- demonstrates elementary knowledge of ethical practices and/or appropriate protocols for research and community consultation
- displays limited skills to research and communicate information.
