What this provision does
This provision allows students to use an exam that has been modified to ensure they can access the exam on the same basis as other students. All exams are developed according to the principles for setting HSC exams, and any approved modifications must comply with the principles for exam provisions.
Who this provision is for
This provision is usually for students who can’t access a standard exam, or some of the questions in it.
For example, a student with:
- severe cerebral palsy or muscular dystrophy might not be able to answer a question that requires them to draw or measure something by hand
- a vision impairment might not be able to answer a question that requires them to analyse an image.
How it works
The student’s school will work with NESA to determine the required modifications. On the day of the exam, the student will receive the modified exam.

- NESA Medical form, usually including a diagnosis of a related condition or disability
- Modified exam information profile, which is part of the online application form schools complete on Schools Online
- NESA Teacher Comments forms
- Student declaration
- NESA Vision form, usually including a diagnosis of a related condition or disability

Schools can find forms and templates for most types of supporting information through the Schools Online platform. They will print out the relevant forms and give them to students, parents or caregivers as needed.
