Rhonda - Senior Project Officer, Regional Industry Education Partnerships
There are a number of major construction projects happening in the Liverpool area, with many job opportunities available for students finishing high school.
Daniel - Senior Construction Manager, Lendlease
Lendlease is proud to be delivering the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct Project. The project has real opportunity with providing people in the area with local employment and the program helps with initiating apprenticeships, learning programs and facilitating the next generation into entering the workforce.
Celeste - Aboriginal Workforce and Industry Participation Manager, Lendlease
Engaging with schools with Lendlease was important as the LHAP project has a target of 25% of the workforce needing to be apprentices. This was a strategic plan that we worked on to engage with local schools to promote the LHAP opportunities.
Rhonda
I approached Lendlease and we worked together with Tafe NSW to design the program which would be suitable for local schools and would connect students with the opportunities at the Liverpool Hospital Academic Precinct.
School students take part in the program one day a week over a five week period. During the program, the participants tour the construction site and do accredited training delivered by Tafe NSW. They also meet staff across the Lendlease team and hear about the jobs and pathways into construction. Finally, students are supported through the application and interview process for work experience and apprenticeships.
Keira - Year 10 student, Hoxton Park High School
I wanted to join the junior construction program so that I can put myself out there and learn all the different techniques I needed to join the workforce.
Adam - Year 10 student, Sefton High School
The junior construction program was enjoyable. Three things I like most about the program was practical, getting up on a truck for working for heights, and the assessments.
Keira
After I finish school I'm hoping I have an apprenticeship by that time. I want to become a carpenter because of all the different skill sets. I'm very into woodwork and hands-on activities.
Daniel
We've just completed the first pilot program in the Liverpool Health and Academic Precinct and today we've actually had the first graduation ceremony for the first 18 students.
Celeste
Rhonda played a key role with working with the local career advisers to source appropriate people for the program. Without Rhonda's contacts within the school, the program would not be what it was today, and it's been a huge success.
Daniel
The program offers youth to better understand the core competencies, basic training and further development required to enter into a particular field or trade profession. When they do finish their schooling there is a pathway that they're aware of and they've got an understanding of what they need to undertake to then enter the workforce.
