Hire costs for an At-Home Caravan
This page explains what hire costs you may incur for an At-Home Caravan if you are accepted into the program.
What is the At-Home Caravans program?
The NSW Government is offering temporary use of caravans to residents in eligible areas whose homes have been damaged by a natural disaster and are uninhabitable.
The caravans will be located on a resident’s private property under an initial 6 month hire agreement while the resident works on rebuilding or relocating. These “at-home caravans” will be provided at no cost to the resident for the first 6 months.
What happens if I need the caravan for longer than 6 months?
Extensions may be considered based on individual circumstances and program criteria. If you wish to continue with the caravan after 6 months and you meet these criteria, you will be required to pay for part of the hire fee (also known as a co-contribution) directly to the supplier. The NSW Government will continue to partially subsidise the hire costs for up to 12 months. See table below for costs.
The subsidy will end after 12 months, and the caravan will need to be returned.
| Period | Resident contribution Weekly - per household |
|---|---|
| 0 – 6 months Full subsidy to support early recovery and transition. | $0 (fully subsidised by NSW Government) |
| 6 months - 12 months Co-contribution to caravan hire is made by resident. | $200 (balance subsidised by NSW Government) |
| After 12 months Program support ends | Caravan is returned |
Will I have to pay any other costs?
You will need to cover your usual household expenses, like electricity, water, and sewage. You will also need to cover any costs associated with setting these services up.
The supplier may also require you to pay your co-contribution in advance on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis.
Under the hire agreement, you may also be responsible for damage to the caravan during your hire term, if the damage is not attributable to general wear and tear.
Find out more about your responsibility in looking after the caravan.
What if I can’t pay the co-contribution or fall behind?
It is your responsibility to ensure that you adhere to your hire agreement with the supplier, including making sure that your contribution is paid regularly and is up to date.
If you are in breach of your agreement, the caravan may be removed from your property.
