Geocoded Addressing theme
The Geocoded Addressing theme is the trusted source for address information in NSW. It provides a centralised database of authoritative address points.
What is the Geocoded Addressing theme?
Geocoded Addressing helps describe locations using address information, like street name and suburb, and links this information to a map location, also called a 'geocode'.
You can use this data for:
- communication and wayfinding
- address validation
- public safety and emergency response
- delivery and service planning
- socio-economic and demographic analysis.
Data sourcing
The NSW Addressing database is the authoritative property addressing system for NSW.
The Addressing database is updated through automated processes using information from:
- Property NSW (Valnet)
- Digital Cadastral Database (legal boundaries)
- Digital Topographic Database (road names and extents)
- councils (address authorities)
- the Geographical Names Board
- Transport for NSW.
Incremental updates are also provided to Geoscape to help keep G‑NAF current for NSW.
Technical information
Metadata for relevant Spatial Services datasets is required to comply with:
- AS/NZS ISO 19115-2 (ANZLIC Metadata Profile v1.1)
- ISO 19139.
Address information is required to conform to the NSW Addressing User Manual.

Address Point
What’s in the dataset?
Address Point is used to map an address. Most address points are system-generated and may not match the exact location of a dwelling unless the point is captured as a building address point.

- service planning.
Sourcing and updates
Spatial Services maintains Address Point in the NSW Addressing database. We update it as new information is received from source systems and partner organisations.
The Geocoded Addressing theme includes these datasets and services.
- Address Point – a point feature class used to spatially locate an address/address string.
- WayPoint – a point located on the RoadSegment feature class for an address where the road naming attributes from both the AddressString and the RoadSegment classes are identical. Indicates the approximate entry point for an address location.
- Proway – a line that spatially connects the AddressPoint and WayPoint.
- AddressString – a table of structured address components used to describe an address.
- NSW Geocoded Addressing theme – an online service that provides access to the theme’s addressing layers
- NSW Geocoded Addressing theme GDA2020 service – GDA2020-aligned version of the service to support modern positioning workflows
- NSW Geocoded Addressing theme multiCRS service – supports requests in multiple coordinate reference systems.
- NSW Foundation Spatial Data Framework (FSDF) – brings together high-value spatial data that is used across government, industry and the community.
Benefits of this data
NSW Point is a Spatial Services API service that is only available to NSW Government agencies. The service helps agencies capture, check and improve address and other location details as they are entered into online forms and business systems.
Using NSW Point can lead to faster, more accurate customer service, better data sharing between teams and more reliable decisions that depend on location information.
NSW Point supports the Foundation Spatial Data Indexes (FSDI): address, land parcel, property and geospatial position (coordinates).
The service can:
- validate addresses and return a consistent, authoritative format
- provide predictive address suggestions for online forms
- use coordinates (latitude and longitude) to return address and location information (reverse geocoding)
- validate cadastral parcel IDs and return related address, property and administrative boundary information
- validate property IDs and return relationships to addresses, parcels and administrative boundaries.
