The Physiography category provides data on NSW land surface or landform features to support planning, environmental management and decision‑making.
What is the Physiography category?
The Physiography category describes the natural physical features of NSW, including landforms such as:
- mountains
- valleys
- beaches
- swamps
- caves.
It brings together geographic naming, elevation and landform information to group landscapes into areas with shared structure. These landscape units help describe the natural landforms.
Physiography data supports:

It helps government, industry and communities understand how the landscape influences water flow, vegetation, soils, erosion and land use.

Data sourcing
The Physiography datasets were originally created through NSW Government topographic mapping programs from the 1970s onwards and from named gazetteers. Updates are applied as required.
Technical information
The Physiography category is a collection of topographic feature classes whose primary characteristics relate to land surface or landform. It includes distinctive land surfaces and formally named landforms with clear or approximate extents, represented as points, lines and areas.
Metadata complies with these standards:
- AS/NZS ISO 19115
- ANZLIC Metadata Profile v1.1
- ISO 19139.
Data is available through OGC compliant web services (WMS and WFS) and common spatial formats.
