What’s this about?
Data centres are a key investment opportunity for NSW. As electricity demand from this sector grows, we need to make sure that NSW households and businesses are not paying costs for the infrastructure needed to support them.
NSW Government is proposing regulatory reforms that seek to ensure data centres can be efficiently connected and supplied electricity without increasing electricity prices and risks for households and small businesses. This is consistent with the principles in the NSW Data Centre Guidelines, including that data centres should impose no net costs to other electricity customers and fund additional supply of energy.
We need reforms to make our electricity network regulatory frameworks fit-for-purpose for data centres. We also want to capitalise on the opportunity to support new renewable energy generation and storage capacity.
These reforms will help reduce pressure on the network, minimise costs and safeguard our consumers and local communities.
The reforms aim to:
- improve network connections and planning
- improve network cost allocation and recovery
- support implementation of measures in the Guidelines
We are seeking public feedback on the proposed reforms through the release of the consultation paper ‘Reforming electricity network connection and cost recovery arrangements for data centres in NSW (PDF, 1 MB).’
