What’s this about?

The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee determines whether a species, population or ecological community should be listed as threatened in New South Wales.

The listing process explained

1. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee develops a preliminary determination that describes how a species, population or ecological community meets the criteria to be listed as threatened. 
   • Under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016, the listing categories for species are:
     • 'critically endangered'
     • 'endangered'
     • 'vulnerable'
     • 'extinct'.
   • For ecological communities the listing categories are:
     • 'critically endangered'
     • 'endangered'
     • 'vulnerable'
     • 'collapsed'.
2. The preliminary determination is placed on public exhibition. This allows the community to comment or provide more information.
3. The Threatened Species Scientific Committee evaluates the submissions it receives. It then makes a final determination whether or not to list the species, population or ecology community as threatened in New South Wales.
4. Final determinations are published on the NSW Legislation website.
