Challenge
The WestConnex project presented a unique challenge for emergency communications in the tunnel. Traditional outdoor signals usually can’t penetrate deeply into constructed tunnels. This creates significant coverage gaps that could hinder emergency response communications.
First responders, such as NSW Fire and Rescue, NSW Ambulance and other essential services, require reliable PSN coverage within the tunnels when attending emergencies and incidents.
Solution
To address this challenge, NSW Telco Authority deployed a comprehensive In-Building Coverage (IBC) solution. This IBC system expanded the reach of the PSN deep underground, bridging the coverage gap within the Rozelle Interchange tunnels.
Outcome
The expansion of PSN coverage into the tunnels has resulted in continuous, reliable communication for emergency services. This significantly improves safety responses for WestConnex commuters in underground environments where traditional communication methods often fail or are inadequate. This IBC solution boosts both safety and operational efficiency in one of Sydney’s most critical transport linkways.
