Digital reminders to ease the squeeze of toll admin fees
Millions of motorists could soon be spared needless administration charges on unpaid tolls, with new digital reminders rolling out from December 15.
From that date, motorists will receive an “unpaid toll reminder” via email within 2-3 days of making a trip on a toll road in which no toll was paid.
The early reminder gives drivers the chance to settle the toll quickly, avoiding the paperwork and costs that currently catch out thousands of drivers every day.
In the 2024-25 financial year, 46 million toll notices with administration fees that totalled $618 million were issued in relation to unpaid tolls on the Sydney toll road network.
Almost 90 per cent of people prefer to receive toll information over digital channels rather than via the post. NSW Motorways is acting on that feedback to update the system and make it fairer.
Unpaid toll reminders are the first step towards delivering consolidated toll notices that will end the practice of toll road operators, including the publicly-owned roads, charging $10 or $20 for each missed toll, rather than sending a single admin fee with missed tolls.
Implementation of consolidated toll notices is one part of ongoing toll reform negotiations with private toll road concessionaires and the NSW Government will provide an update on progress at the first opportunity.
This initiative forms part of the Minns Labor Government’s plan to make Sydney’s tolling system fairer after years of privatisation under the former Liberal and National Government.
The Government has already acted by permanently extending the $60-a-week toll cap, ensuring families have a safety net against high toll costs.
As of November 2025, more than $200 million has been returned to motorists through the toll cap.
We’re fixing the system we inherited by delivering fairer tolls and putting motorists, not toll companies first.
Minister for Transport John Grahamsaid:
“A simple trip on a toll road can turn into a paperwork-generated headache under the current system and this digital reminder is a good first step in creating a much more user-friendly network.
“This has the potential to benefit millions of motorists who use the Sydney toll road network.
"The unpaid toll reminder could be the email that saves motorists hundreds of millions of dollars in administration fees. It’s a chance to save $10 every time.
Camilla Drover, Acting Chief Executive, NSW Motorways said:
"This move will mean immediate improvements for toll customers, so look out for emails from ‘NSW Motorways’ - it could save you a lot of money.
“The vast majority of people who miss a toll immediately, but we hope these emails will be a valuable reminder. Of course, the best way to avoid fees is to have a toll account in working order.
“We want to acknowledge all partners involved in the complex process to develop this solution for customers just before the Christmas period when we know they will be travelling more."
