Rapidly Deployable Large-Area Wi-Fi system demonstration
NSW Telco Authority co-hosted the demonstration with Fire and Rescue NSW to showcase the first six months of development for this important initiative.
The Rapidly Deployable Large-Area Wi-Fi (LAWiFi) System is a pilot project of the Connectivity Innovation Network (CIN).
NSW Telco Authority worked with the project team to demonstrate the capability of the wi-fi system to bridge connectivity gaps and provide broadband for regional communities and Emergency Services Organisations.
The demonstration was held at Fire and Rescue NSW’s Emergency Services Academy. The system seamlessly established high-speed connectivity across a 500 square metre range at a speed close to 10 megabits per second.
The system uses patented wireless networking protocols and innovative high-gain multibeam antennas. It is designed to provide cost-effective, high-speed wi-fi connectivity for remote public broadband internet access over large geographical areas.
The project is led by Professor Yonghui Li from the University of Sydney in partnership with the University of Technology Sydney, Pivotel Satellite, nbn Australia and Real Access.
We look forward to continuing to explore the potential of this technology for a diverse range of applications, including when critical telecommunications infrastructure is damaged during natural disasters.
