How reliable is your internet and mobile service during emergencies? Have you struggled to stay connected during a storm, bushfire or flood? Your insights can help improve connectivity when it matters most.
From devastating bushfires to widespread floods, NSW communities have faced significant natural disasters in recent years. In these moments, reliable internet and mobile connectivity can mean the difference between safety and isolation.
NSW Telco Authority (NSWTA) is leading the Community Connectivity Research Project—a research initiative funded by the Australian Government —to better understand how internet and mobile disruptions impact individuals, businesses and emergency responders during disasters. The findings will help shape future NSW Government decisions and policies, helping communities remain connected when they need it most.
NSWTA has partnered with researchers Scyne Advisory, to gather first-hand experiences from people affected by connectivity loss during disasters. If you’ve experienced internet or mobile disruptions during an emergency, we want to hear from you.
All responses are anonymous and will contribute to long-term improvements in NSW’s connectivity and emergency preparedness. The research findings will also support the Digital Connectivity Index, a tool measuring the quality of connectivity across NSW.
NSWTA manages the Public Safety Network (PSN), the largest dedicated emergency communications network in the Southern Hemisphere. This network is relied upon by first responders, but everyday digital connectivity is just as crucial for individuals and businesses during disasters to receive emergency warnings, contact loved ones, or access vital information.
Recent disasters have highlighted gaps in coverage, capacity and resilience, particularly in disaster-prone areas. This research will identify key challenges and help develop solutions. such as Community Connectivity Kits, which can be rapidly deployed to restore connectivity during emergencies.
By sharing your experience, you’re helping shape a safer, more connected NSW.
