Building surveyors – qualifications and experience
Find out what's required to become a building surveyor in NSW.
Building surveyors
Building surveyors can hold either unrestricted or restricted registration.
- Restricted registration limits the types of buildings you can survey.
- Unrestricted registration means you can survey any type of building.
The qualifications and experience you need for each registration type are listed below.
Note: Some of the courses that are still recognised are no longer on offer.
Building surveyor – unrestricted
You have completed any of the following:
- Bachelor of Building Surveying and Certification (Honours) from Central Queensland University
- Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) (Honours) from the University of Newcastle (commenced on or after 1 January 2011)
- Bachelor of Construction Management (building surveying option) from the University of South Australia
- Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying from Western Sydney University, Bond University or the University of South Australia
- Graduate Diploma of Building Surveying from Holmesglen Institute (awarded before 31 December 2018)
- Master of Building Surveying from Bond University or Western Sydney University
- Masters degree, bachelor degree or graduate diploma in building surveying from a university or higher education provider identified on the TEQSA National Register as a self-accrediting authority
- Masters degree, bachelor degree or graduate diploma in building surveying listed as an approved course on the TEQSA National Register
The following qualifications are still recognised for building surveyor – unrestricted:
- Bachelor of Building Surveying from the Central Queensland University (This course is no longer on offer)
- Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) from the University of Newcastle (for people starting this course from 1 January 2011 only)
- Bachelor of Construction Management and Economics (building surveying option) from the University of South Australia
- Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying and Assessment – University of Technology Sydney (no longer on offer)
- Post Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying from Bond University
You have 3 years of recent relevant practical experience.

Building surveyor – restricted (all classes of building)
You have completed any of the following:
- Bachelor of Building Surveying and Certification (Honours) from Central Queensland University
- Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) (Honours) from the University of Newcastle (begun on or after 1 January 2011)
- Bachelor of Construction Management (building surveying option) from the University of South Australia
- Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying from Western Sydney University, Bond University or the University of South Australia

- NVR approved Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying (CPC60115)
- Graduate diploma or graduate certificate in building surveying from a university or higher education provider identified on the TEQSA National Register as a self-accrediting authority
- Graduate diploma or graduate certificate in building surveying listed as an approved course on the TEQSA National Register
The following qualifications are still recognised for building surveyor – restricted (all classes of building):
- Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying from TAFE Leederville, Western Australia (no longer on offer)
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management and Economics) from Curtin University of Technology
- Bachelor of Building (Building Surveying) from University of Western Sydney/Western Sydney University (no longer on offer)
- Bachelor of Building Surveying from Central Queensland University (no longer on offer)
- Bachelor of Building Surveying and Inspections from Central Queensland University (no longer on offer)
- Bachelor of Built Environment from the University of South Australia
- Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) from the University of Newcastle (for people starting this course from 1 January 2011 only)
- Graduate Diploma in Building Surveying and Assessment from the University of Technology Sydney (no longer on offer)
