International Day of People with Disability 2025

On Wednesday 3 December 2025, we celebrated International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD).
IDPwD is a United Nations (UN) day held each year and recognised worldwide to promote community awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability.
IDPwD is an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of the 5.5 million people living with disability in Australia, who make up 21% of the Australian population.
Each year, the UN chooses a theme for International Day of People with Disability. This year’s theme was “Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress.” The Australian Government funds a national program to raise awareness of this day.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) plays a vital role in supporting disability-inclusive societies by providing funding for essential disability-related services and supports and aims to remove the physical, technological and attitudinal barriers that people living with disability may face.
The NSW Trustee and Guardian is continuously working towards improving outcomes for people living with decision-making disabilities through their advocacy and by supporting the dignity, rights and wellbeing of people living with disability.
In Australia, IDPwD is a joint effort between government, schools, organisations, community groups, businesses and individuals and provides an opportunity to be part of creating inclusive communities.
