Upcoming Parramatta River closure to support Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 construction
The Parramatta River will undergo temporary closures this October as John Holland undertakes essential works as part of the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 Enabling Works project.
The critical works will involve Ausgrid relocating the 132kV electrical wires spanning the river ahead of construction of the new public and active transport bridge connecting Wentworth Point to Melrose Park. This bridge will significantly enhance Sydney’s future transport infrastructure.
To enable this complex work to be completed safely, the navigational channel upstream of Sydney Olympic Park Wharf will be closed and impact all river users, including the F3 ferry service between Sydney Olympic Park and Parramatta, commercial operators and recreational vessels.
The closures will mainly occur on weekends to reduce the impact on the electrical network and the community. Work will be undertaken on:
Friday 17 October – Sunday 19 October 2025
The closure begins after the last ferry at 8.30pm Friday and will reopen at 5.00am on Monday morning, allowing ferries to resume operations according to the regular timetable.
How will the closure periods impact you?
- Ermington Boat Ramp will be closed until Friday 24 October. Silverwater Boat Ramp will be closed during the above-mentioned closure period only. Users will need to seek alternate launch points via Boat ramps map (NSW). Signage will be installed at these locations to notify users.
- On the F3 Parramatta River route, there will be no ferry services operating between Sydney Olympic Park Wharf and Parramatta Wharf, including Rydalmere Wharf, with replacement bus services operating. Ferry services will continue between Circular Quay Wharf and Sydney Olympic Park Wharf as usual.
The asset owner, Ausgrid, has advised there are no anticipated power outages or network disruptions associated with these activities.
These works are a vital step in the Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2 Enabling Works project. The new bridge between Wentworth Point and Melrose Park will provide a critical connection for residents and commuters, enhancing accessibility and supporting regional growth.
