Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Prescribed Text – Part A
Question 1
In better responses, students were able to:
- analyse rather than summarise or describe (c)
- provide examples from the text (c)
- make reference to language and to commentary (c).
Areas for students to improve include:
- using the extract provided to answer the question, drawing specific examples from it (c)
- developing a better understanding of the Hebrew text (c)
- providing a detailed response (c).
Question 2
In better responses, students were able to:
- use examples in the extract to demonstrate how the verses reflect Abraham’s need (a)
- provide specific examples of Abraham’s need (a)
- make reference to the extract and commentary (a).
Areas for students to improve include:
- selecting appropriate detail from the extract to support their response (a)
- developing a better understanding of the Hebrew text (a).
Prescribed Text – Part B
Question 8
In better responses, students were able to:
- use all the extracts
- use the extracts to focus on the relationships
- compare and contrast different ideas/themes related to the question
- structure their ideas into cohesive paragraphs
- begin their response with an introduction and end with a conclusion.
Areas for students to improve include:
- reading and understanding the question before writing a response
- focussing on the key words of the question while reading through the extracts provided
- reading the response at the conclusion of each paragraph to make sure the content addresses the question asked.

Question 11
In better responses, students were able to:
- address all parts of the question separately
- account for each line in the question and relate it to the extract and commentary.
Unseen text
Students should:
- improve their vocabulary in order to understand the text
- complete practice questions on unseen texts
- leave sufficient time to complete the unseen text question in the examination
- read the question and the text carefully in order to maximise understanding
- read their responses to ensure they are coherent and address the question.
Question 12
In better responses, students were able to:
- show their knowledge of the meaning of the verses in the extract (b)
- describe the conquests in detail (b).
Question 13
In better responses, students were able to:
- analyse the motives as well as describe the actions (a)
- deduce motives from the actions described in the text (a)
- provide detail from the text, demonstrating an understanding of the Hebrew (a).
