Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- use the marks allocated to a question as an indication of the depth and length of response required
- focus on key words in order to address the requirements of the question, for example, explain, account for, compare, analyse, assess
- address all parts of the question, in particular those relating to reference to other parts of the text or commentary
- show detailed knowledge of the extracts
- refer to any given verses or statements in their response, showing clear and detailed understanding.
In better responses, students were able to:
- show detailed knowledge of commentary (Q1b, Q2a, Q3, Q5a, Q5b, Q6a, Q7b)
- refer in the response to the verses quoted in the question (Q5b, Q7b)
- refer to all relevant ideas in the extracts provided to respond thoroughly to the question (Q1b, Q2a, Q3, Q4a, Q5a, Q6a, Q8)
- compare, not just describe people or situations (Q2a, Q6a)
- provide analysis as opposed to a description of actions (Q3)
- correctly identify and account for grammatical items, using the correct grammatical terms (Q1a, Q2b, Q5b, Q5c, Q6b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- developing thorough knowledge of the use of qere and ketiv (Q4b)
- developing greater knowledge of commentary (Q1b, Q2a, Q3, Q5a, Q5b, Q6a, Q7b)
- showing detailed knowledge of the prescribed texts and their context (Q8)
- developing a greater understanding of key words in order to address the requirements of the question, for example, identify, describe, explain, account for, compare, assess and evaluate.
In better responses, students were able to:
- accurately describe cases, opinions and situations
- show detailed knowledge of commentary.
Areas for students to improve include:
- developing greater knowledge of the texts
- developing greater knowledge of the commentary
- developing a better understanding of nuances in cases and situations.
In better responses, students were able to:
- extract information and explain rather than just translate or paraphrase the text (Q12e, Q12h, Q13b, Q13d, Q13f)
- account for grammatical features (Q12f, Q13e)
- accurately parse and give meaning of unseen verbs (Q12d)
- recognise varying meaning of words in context (Q12a, Q12g)
- refer to the Hebrew words in the question (Q13b).
Areas for students to improve include:
- developing a thorough knowledge of grammatical features and vocalisation (Q12d, Q12f, Q13e)
- developing strategies to interpret unseen texts.
