Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Students should:
- be prepared to communicate a variety of topics relating to their personal world
- elaborate and provide relevant details addressing the questions engaging with the examiner
- use a range of vocabulary, expressions and language structures responding appropriately to the questions
- provide information, express ideas and comment on their personal world
- be prepared to respond to questions from a different perspective
- be prepared to respond to questions that relate to past, present and future aspects of their personal world
- avoid repetition of the same vocabulary, phrases and expressions
- manipulate language to fulfil the requirements of the question
- be prepared to be interrupted by the examiner
- use Korean to ask for repetition and/or clarification of the question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- use conjunctions, such as 그래서, 그런데, 그러면 to link ideas
- use correct tenses
- use a wide range of sentence structures and vocabulary, related to the topic within the syllabus
- answer unexpected questions without hesitation
- respond with depth and relevance and expand on responses by providing reasons, examples and comments
- elaborate and justify ideas and opinions using detailed, authentic, personalised examples relating to past, present and future aspects of their personal world
- speak clearly and confidently on a variety of topics
- articulate their responses fluently with correct pronunciation and intonation.
Areas for students to improve include:
- not confusing words that have similar sounds, such as 서핑/쇼핑, ~도/ 더, 할 것 같아요/한 것 같아요, 사람이에요/살아요, 좋아요/좋아해요
- avoiding basic grammatical errors, for example, 이에요/있어요 endings
- using a variety of sentence beginnings and endings when responding to questions
- using Sino and pure Korean numbers correctly, such as 사 년, 두 시간, 세 명
- avoiding repeating the same structures, such as ~고 싶어요, 왜냐하면
- avoiding using formulaic expressions and pre-prepared responses irrelevant to the questions
- avoiding repeating the examiner’s sentence structures used in the question
- understanding the words in the question, such as 왜, 어떻게, 언제, 어디에/어디에서, 무슨, 어떤
- using particles, such as 을/를, 이/가 correctly.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- read each question carefully
- make notes in the Candidate’s Notes column on the right-hand side of the page
- transcribe responses onto the lines, using the space provided for each question
- use the lines provided as a guide to the length of the response required
- ensure responses are clear and address all parts of the question
- use their own words and respond in English
- avoid translating text as part of the response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide textual references with a supporting argument
- summarise concisely when instructed
- justify answers with evidence from the text without simply translating the text
- identify the keyword and answer the questions accordingly.
Areas for students to improve include:
- revising vocabulary related to topics
- writing in the extra booklet provided rather than all over the page
- summarising main points using their own words.
Students should:
- read the whole text(s)
- address all parts of each question
- use the lines, table, chart allocated for the response
- provide all necessary details to respond to the question fully
- support the response with evidence from the text, where required
- use own words rather than a literal translation
- use the dictionary appropriately to find the correct meaning of the word(s) in context.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide relevant details from the text
- refer to all stimulus texts to justify the response.
Areas for students to improve include:
- revising vocabulary and language structures from the syllabus
- structuring the response logically and writing in comprehensible English
- avoiding repetition of ideas and vocabulary.
Students should:
- write to the word length required
- address audience, purpose and context required by the question
- apply the conventions of the type of text indicated in the question
- use correct register throughout the response
- use a range of tenses, sentence structures and variety of vocabulary
- avoid repeating the same expressions throughout the response
- use the dictionary carefully to access vocabulary and expressions meaningful to the context of the response
- avoid listing
- edit their work.
In better responses, students were able to:
- use a variety of language structures and well sequenced ideas
- provide a justification and reasoning for the idea identified
- provide relevant ideas and support them with appropriate examples
- reflect on their own ideas and opinions according to audience, purpose and context
- use a variety of complex language structures correctly.
Areas for students to improve include:
- checking correct spelling and grammar, for example, 내 (I) and 네 (you)
- writing with accurate particles and consistent register
- reading the Korean and English version of the question carefully to thoroughly understand the task description
- using authentic expressions.
