Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Students should:
- engage in regular practice of a variety of vocabulary and sentence structures
- listen to spoken Korean from a variety of sources
- familiarise themselves with the topics outlined in the Korean Continuers syllabus that are linked to their personal world
- learn a variety of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate for reflection, comparison and justification
- practise the subject content studies in the Preliminary and HSC Korean Continuers courses.
In better responses, students were able to:
- engage effectively in conversation by responding to all the questions with a wide range of appropriate responses
- speak with fluency and clarity of ideas, and pronunciation and intonation
- manipulate the language effectively by using a variety of sentence structures, embedded clauses, connectives and conjunctions to reflect on aspects of past, present and future
- elaborate on ideas and information by presenting, explaining and justifying opinions and points of view.
Areas for students to improve include:
- manipulating language by using a variety of sentence structures and tenses when reflecting on ideas and events
- responding appropriately to the questions asked rather than presenting memorised segments of language or familiar pre-prepared responses
- substantiating ideas and information with a variety of appropriate examples.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- familiarise themselves with a range of vocabulary and sentence structures from the various topics studied in class
- read the questions carefully to determine the specific requirements for each question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate clear understanding of the main ideas as well as specific information in texts
- support their responses with detailed reference to the text
- determine the purpose and the audience of texts and respond to questions correctly
- analyse ideas and information and respond to questions using their own words rather than provide mere translations of segments of text.
Areas for students to improve include:
- demonstrating a more holistic understanding of texts that is beyond the literal understanding, and using this understanding to respond to questions appropriately and correctly
- paying special attention to the requirements of every question
- avoiding translating parts of texts
- including specific reference to content and language in questions that require it.
Students should:
- read the texts and the questions carefully and locate the key ideas and the general gist of each text
- identify the specific requirements of every question
- use the number of lines and the mark value of each question as an indication of the depth required for each question.
In better responses, students were able to:
- integrate specific details in their answer
- identify and purpose and the audience in texts
- refer to both content and language and give specific examples to respond to questions perceptively
- justify their responses with examples from the texts.
Areas for students to improve include:
- paying special attention to the requirement of every question
- avoiding translation of parts of texts and using the translation as the answer.
Students should:
- address all cues in detail - those explicitly stated as well as those implied
- analyse content of texts carefully and engage with the text in a more meaningful way
- use their dictionary effectively
- use a variety of language structures, expressions and authentic vocabulary
- organise ideas in paragraphs to produce coherent texts
- revise the correct use of past tenses, present subjunctive, conditional mood, future tense and hypothetical constructions
- read the text carefully and identify the main ideas and information that should be used in answering the question
- read the question carefully paying special attention to its specific requirements
- write with the text type required and word limit specified.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate an excellent ability to understand all ideas and information in the text by writing a response that is reflective of these ideas
- demonstrate an excellent ability to organise and structure ideas and information logically and coherently
- use their own words in responding to the various ideas in the text, with a range of vocabulary and a variety of sentence structures.
Areas for students to improve include:
- expressing ideas derived from the information in the text rather than from general knowledge
- elaborate their responses within the clues given in the text
- organise their ideas in a logical manner appropriate to the text type and its language conventions.
Students should:
- write a whole text with special attention to ideas, language and structure
- write ideas and opinions with depth and support their ideas with a variety of examples
- use a variety of vocabulary and sentence structures to express ideas and information.
In better responses, students were able to:
- write appropriately for the audience, purpose and context of the task
- include a variety of ideas and information appropriate to the requirement of the task
- expand their ideas and support them with excellent appropriate and logical ideas
- sequence and structure their responses using appropriate language conventions, correct grammatical structures and a range of vocabulary and sentence structures.
Areas for students to improve include:
- including a variety of ideas in their responses
- paying special attention to spelling and grammar
- writing for the purpose and audience specified in the question
- adhering to the word limit specified in the question.
