Marking guidelines
Marking guidelines are developed with the examination paper and are used by markers to guide their marking of a student's response. The table shows the criteria with each mark or mark range.
Sample answers may also be developed and included in the guidelines to make sure questions assess a student's knowledge and skills, and guide the Supervisor of Marking on the expected nature and scope of a student's response. They are not intended to be exemplary or even complete answers or responses.
Marking feedback

Use the feedback to guide preparation for future examinations. Feedback includes an overview of the qualities of better responses. Feedback may not be provided for every question.
Feedback on practical examination
Students should:
- engage effectively in the conversation and respond in some depth to a range of questions relevant to their personal world
- use consistently good intonation and pronunciation
- respond by demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of a range of structures and vocabulary, relevant to the questions asked.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide a coherent response to questions, demonstrating both depth and breadth across a range of topics
- demonstrate use of complex language structures, sophisticated vocabulary and authentic manipulation of language which also often included the use of idiomatic expressions
- demonstrate a high level of grammatical accuracy consistently throughout the conversation.
Areas for students to improve include:
- acquiring and retaining a wide range of vocabulary on the topics that relate to a student’s personal world
- developing the language structures to facilitate the expression of student ideas
- revising grammar to enable linguistically correct responses
- practising conversation skills on a regular basis.
Feedback on written examination
Students should:
- read the question carefully and respond to all parts of the question
- make notes in the ‘Candidate Notes’ column on the right-hand side of the page
- transcribe their response on to the lines allocated beneath the question
- use the number of lines as an indication of required length of response
- support their responses with reference to relevant content and language, using their own words
- avoid translating the text as part of their response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- address all key parts of the question and support their responses with relevant evidence from the text
- refer to both content and language if required by the question
- give concise and succinct responses if required to summarise
- demonstrate an holistic understanding of texts as well as understand specific information
- respond using their own and did not provide a translation of the text in answer to the question.
Areas for students to improve include:
- transcribing their notes from the ‘Candidate’s Notes’ column in to the space provided below the question
- supporting responses with evidence and examples from the text
- using dictionary appropriately find the correct meaning of word or words for the context
- proofreading responses so that they make sense and are not contradictory.
Students should:
- use only the lines or space beneath the question for the response
- support their responses with reference to content and language, using their own words
- be succinct in their responses, addressing the relevant details required by the question and avoid repetition
- focus on key words in the question, for example ‘how … ?’ and respond in relation to context of text
- demonstrate an understanding of the whole text and respond with relevant information and ideas
- analyse the information in the text and draw a conclusion or justify a point of view rather than give a literal translation of text
- use the dictionary appropriately to find the correct meaning of the word(s) or expressions in context.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate a holistic understanding of the text as well as provide specific detail(s) required by the question
- respond with relevant details avoiding simply a translation of the text
- support their responses with appropriate references from the text
- explain using their own words, how or why textual references to content or language were effective.
Areas for students to improve include:
- using the dictionary appropriately to find the correct meaning of the word or words for the context of the text
- editing responses to avoid repetition and avoid re-using responses from other questions
- using own words or paraphrasing to show understanding of quotes from text
- avoid using translated segments from texts as their own response.
Students should:
- respond to the question asked in relation to the text
- demonstrate understanding of the whole text and not just respond to questions asked in the text
- respond to all relevant information and key points raised in the text, for example comments made, requests for advise, observations made
- provide creative and authentic responses whilst demonstrating understanding of the text
- use a variety of vocabulary and expressions and a range of grammatical structures
- edit their work to ensure clarity of response.
In better responses, students were able to:
- demonstrate an excellent understanding of the text by addressing in depth all the key points, for example, acknowledgement of hospitality, concern about not speaking English well, description of neighbourhood
- demonstrate use of correct register for the context of the response, for example αγαπητέ Πάνο..., Τα λέμε Γιάννης
- manipulate language authentically and creatively, using sophisticated vocabulary and appropriate idiomatic expressions
- use correct grammatical structures and syntax
- respond using original ideas and not simply translating original text
- sequence their ideas logically, using appropriate conventions of language.
Areas for students to improve include:
- demonstrating understanding of the whole text by responding to information in the text using their own words
- responding in a coherent and logical way to show understanding of text
- ensuring meeting the correct length requirements of task
- maintaining consistent use of correct register throughout the response, for example informal letter, second person register, appropriate verb conjugation
- applying the correct vocabulary for the context, for example, θα πάμε στο δικαστήριο (context) να παίξουμε μπάσκετ
- agreement between articles, adjectives and nouns and correct use of verb tenses and conjugations
- proofreading their work to ensure clarity of response.
Students should:
- ensure they address the requirements of the question including correct use of register and type of text
- use the dictionary effectively by selecting vocabulary to suit the context
- demonstrate an ability to manipulate language to suit the requirements of the task
- commence and conclude the response appropriately
- plan their response to ensure a clear structure and sequence
- proofread and edit their text.
In better responses, students were able to:
- provide significant detail to address the question thoroughly
- use correct register throughout the response
- demonstrate a high level of accuracy in grammar and syntax
- demonstrate knowledge of agreement between article, noun, adjective, and the correct use of case
- apply correct use of verbs, for example agreement of verb conjugation to subject pronoun, use of appropriate tense(s), revising active and passive voice.
- compose a coherent text that is clearly sequenced.
Areas for students to improve include:
- revising vocabulary, expressions and idiomatic expressions that relate to the topic in the syllabus
- revising rules of grammar and sentence structures
- organising the text in a coherent and logical manner
- engaging in wide-reading to enhance their language skills, comprehension and knowledge of Modern Greek vocabulary and expressions
- use dictionary appropriately to ensure correct word(s) or expressions are used in the context of the question.
