Performance band descriptions for Japanese in Context summarise the knowledge, understanding and skills typically demonstrated by students at each band level. NESA uses these holistic descriptions to report a student's level of achievement in the HSC exam.
Band 6
The typical performance in this band:
- presents complex information, ideas and opinions, demonstrating highly-developed skills in justifying and reflecting on issues
- displays highly developed skills in communicating for a variety of purposes appropriate to different audiences and cultural contexts
- presents a refined personal or critical response showing effective skills in analysing and synthesising a range of texts
- demonstrates extensive knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
- manipulates literary devices to compose texts for a variety of contexts, purposes and audiences.
Band 5
The typical performance in this band:
- presents complex information, ideas and opinions, demonstrating well-developed skills in justifying and reflecting on issues
- displays well-developed skills in communicating for different purposes appropriate to audiences and cultural contexts
- presents a personal or critical response showing effective skills in analysing and synthesising texts
- demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
- applies literary devices effectively to compose texts for a variety of contexts, purposes and audiences.
Band 4
The typical performance in this band:
- presents some complex information, ideas and opinions, demonstrating skills in justifying and reflecting on issues
- displays sound skills in communicating for different purposes appropriate to audiences and/or cultural contexts
- presents a personal or critical response showing skills in analysing and synthesising texts
- demonstrates sound knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
- uses literary devices with some control to compose texts for different contexts, purposes and/or audiences.
Band 3
The typical performance in this band:
- presents information, ideas and/or opinions, demonstrating basic skills in explaining or reflecting
- displays basic skills in communicating for different purposes, audiences or cultural contexts
- presents a personal or critical response showing basic skills in analysing or synthesising texts
- demonstrates basic knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
- composes texts with variable control for different contexts, purposes and audiences.
Band 2
The typical performance in this band:
- presents information, ideas and opinions and demonstrates limited skills in explaining and/or reflecting
- displays elementary skills in communicating for a purpose, audience or cultural context
- presents an undeveloped personal response showing recognition of the main ideas and some specific details in texts
- demonstrates limited knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
- composes texts with limited understanding of context, purpose and audience.
Band 1
Performance reported as Band 1 indicates that the minimum standard expected was not demonstrated.
