Band 6

• displays highly developed skills in communicating for a variety of purposes appropriate to different audiences and cultural contexts
• presents a refined personal or critical response showing effective skills in analysing and synthesising a range of texts
• demonstrates extensive knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
• manipulates literary devices to compose texts for a variety of contexts, purposes and audiences.

Band 5

The typical performance in this band:

• presents complex information, ideas and opinions, demonstrating well-developed skills in justifying and reflecting on issues
• displays well-developed skills in communicating for different purposes appropriate to audiences and cultural contexts
• presents a personal or critical response showing effective skills in analysing and synthesising texts
• demonstrates thorough knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
• applies literary devices effectively to compose texts for a variety of contexts, purposes and audiences.

Band 4

• displays sound skills in communicating for different purposes appropriate to audiences and/or cultural contexts
• presents a personal or critical response showing skills in analysing and synthesising texts
• demonstrates sound knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
• uses literary devices with some control to compose texts for different contexts, purposes and/or audiences.

Band 3

• composes texts with variable control for different contexts, purposes and audiences.

Band 2

• presents an undeveloped personal response showing recognition of the main ideas and some specific details in texts
• demonstrates limited knowledge and understanding of the interrelationship between language, culture and identity
• composes texts with limited understanding of context, purpose and audience.
