Multi-factor authentication
Learn how to set up 2-step verification (a type of multi-factor authentication) for your NESA Identity (NESA ID).
What you need to set up 2-step verification
When accessing certain NESA websites, you will need to use your NESA ID credentials (username and password) to sign in.
You need to have created a NESA ID – a username and password – before you can set up 2-step verification to secure your account.
Then select one of these verification methods:
- use an Australian or New Zealand mobile number, or
- download an authenticator app on your mobile device (for example, Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator) from the App Store or Google Play.
An authenticator app is more secure than using a mobile number. It also allows you to verify when you don’t have access to the internet or an Australian mobile number.
Follow the prompts on your screen
Choose between Authenticator app or text message verification methods
Follow the instructions
Available options for multi-factor authentication:
- Authenticator app
- Text message (SMS)
Finish set up
We recommend using an authenticator app. This is a more secure method of verification than a text message because they do not rely on mobile networks and are generally more difficult to intercept than an unencrypted text message.
Go to 'Profile'
Select 'Change NESA ID details'
Select '2-step verification'
Follow the prompts to update your verification method
If you get a new phone, download the same authenticator app and sign in with your existing username and password to continue accessing your NESA services.
If you do not have access to your preferred authentication method overseas, you will not be able to sign in with your NESA ID until you return home.
Text message (SMS)
You’ll need access to your Australian or New Zealand mobile number while travelling. You cannot use an international phone number.
You may use a one-time code sent to your email address in place of your mobile number.
Authenticator app (more secure)
You can use any authenticator app in the App Store or Google Play. An authenticator app is more secure than text messages and does not rely on your mobile number.
