Selection and use of cranes
Planning
Planning a lift? Here's a guide on what to consider.
Many factors determine the type and capacity of crane selection for lifting activities.
During the planning stage of the job, the crane should be selected based on the following factors:
- crane availability
- site access
- ground bearing pressure and/or travel path
- rated lifting capacity to pick and place the load
- boom angle consideration
- the number of loads to be lifted
- crane position onsite
- underground or overhead services
- environmental, like wind, storms, lightning, and water.
Once the cranes are selected, the operator, doggers and riggers should be mindful of their safe use.
Wherever possible, the crane and load should be set up to minimise the following factors:
- the load height from the ground
- boom angle
- boom length.
The crane crew needs to be competent to assemble, configure and disassemble the crane.
